Abstract

The study analyzes the implementation of the Quick Changeover (SMED) method in the machining sector of a metal-mechanical industry located in southern Santa Catarina. With increasing global competitiveness and the pursuit of leaner production, the work focuses on improving the pilot machine’s yield, along with reducing costs and waste caused by the misuse of productive resources. The main objective of this methodology is to reduce setup time while increasing efficiency and productivity. The application of this method involved the use of Lean Manufacturing principles, specifically the techniques developed by Shigeo Shingo, which focus on converting internal setup into external setup. The process began with a detailed analysis of setup times through video recordings, allowing for a clear separation of internal and external activities, resulting in the determination of an ideal setup time. To facilitate understanding and practical application of the SMED methodology, the study focused on a specific production flow in the machining sector, using a pilot machine, the Heller Machining Center model MCI25.1. During implementation, all stages of the process were observed, from the initial analysis to the application of the proposed improvements. The results showed a significant reduction in setup times, enabling greater flexibility and quality in production, as well as customer satisfaction due to reduced delivery lead time. At the same time, it optimized productive resources and reduced waste, reaffirming the importance of the SMED method as an effective tool in the pursuit of operational excellence.
